Another reason to be excited about "Managing the E-Learning Experience," is that I can finally talk about QR codes as a part of my current position!
I hope some of you were able attend the Libraries Thriving Spring seminar, "Find, Point, Scan: Using QR Codes In Your Library." Elizabeth Graves (NSULA) and I presented it twice this week. I've presented on this topic several times and talk about them with anyone who will listen - but I'm always amazed by these little codes because - boy! They just keep changing!
QR codes, now trademarked, are to be referred to by their generic label "2D" codes. Lucky for us, only the name was trademarked and not the technology. Use of that technology is changing too, and I think for the better. When the 2D codes were first introduced, you could find one on the back of every soda can and magazine perfume ad out there, however they were not linking users to worthwhile information. A discounted soda and a perfume advertisement? Hmpf. I wasn't on wifi - wait - I wasted my data for THAT!? Those who are continuing to use codes are changing their users experience. Instead of a gimmicky discount or entering a prize, users are accessing exclusive content with their scanning. And that goes for library content too!
One of the larger 2D code projects at CPCC Libraries has been the introduction of 2D codes in the stacks. Each code, links students to a special QR version of a subject (think english and math, not CIS110) libguide featuring not only the regular content of that subject guide, but also a tab of recommended applications to download. For example, our American Sign Language QR version of the libguide features 4 apps to help students practice their ASL skills. Take a look....

I'll continue to write about 2D code application in this forum. It's something I'm passionate about and I believe we can't let 2D codes die out! How often does a FREE tool come along to link our digital and physical resources? Please share your experiences, I'd love to collaborate with you!
